This month’s featured bulk herb of the month is St. John’s wort, an herb with a long history of medicinal use dating back to ancient Greece. It is traditionally harvested when it begins to flower, around St. John’s Day (June 24th; though typically earlier in our drier climate). This herbaceous perennial, Hypericum perforatum, is native to Europe but is now widespread in temperate climates around the world. It is even considered an invasive weed in some countries.
St. John’s wort produces small, bright yellow flowers reminiscent of the sun, and the name “perforatum” refers to tiny holes in its leaves, which in folklore were said to let sunlight into one’s eyes, lifting the spirits. Appropriately, this herb promotes a healthy mood and emotional balance, aiding in times of depression and winter blues.
St John’s wort also has antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful for healing wounds, burns, and scars. As an antiviral and a nervine, it can be used to relieve viruses that infect the nervous system such as herpes and shingles, and nervous system exhaustion and emotional stress.
You can find dried St. John’s wort in our bulk department. It can be prepared as a tea, tinctured, or incorporated into topical preparations such as oil infusions or salves.
