Dong quai is a perennial herb in the Apiaceae (celery) family that is native to high altitude regions of China and Japan. Angelica sinensis grows in cold, damp areas and produces clusters of small, white flowers. It’s cultivated for its roots, which are harvested in the fall.
Traditional Use
Dong quai is an important herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), also being referred to as “female ginseng.” The Chinese phrase “dong quai” literally translates to “state of return.” Ancient Chinese folklore tells of an angel appearing in a monk’s dream, telling him to use dong quai to cure the plague that was ravaging the country. Other traditional healing systems and cultures have also employed dong quai, including Ayurveda, Native American herbalism, and Western herbalism.
Health Benefits
Traditionally, it has been used as a tonic, spice, and medicinal herb for thousands of years, especially for women’s reproductive health. It has been used to treat premenstrual symptoms, menstrual cramps, amenorrhea, endometriosis, and menopause symptoms like hot flashes. Dong quai has blood tonifying effects, increasing red blood cell counts and increasing blood flow to the reproductive system.
This versatile herb also has gastroprotective effects, protecting the mucus layer that covers the digestive tract from overproduction of stomach acid and ulcers. It has also been shown to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, reduce dangerous cholesterol levels, and reduce plaque formation and blood pressure in the arteries.
More scientific evidence is needed to confirm dong quai’s efficacy in humans, as most studies have been done on animals and in combination with other herbs. As such, there is no recommended dosage (consult with your herbal or healthcare provider).
