Closer to Heaven Farm delivers fresh regional, high quality eggs to Moonflower.
Paul and Susan Chenault have been in business for 15 years. The farm is located on the Red Lands Mesa outside Hotchkiss, Colorado. At 6,500 feet elevation, they truly are “closer to Heaven.” The Chenault’s along with their chickens and goats have views of the Grand Mesa the largest continuing flat top mountain in the US, Flat Top Mountain, San Juan Range and the Gunnison Gorge.
The 400 Closer to Heaven high bred hens are free range chickens. They spend the days clucking around the outdoor large runs and escape to the warm safety of the barn at night to keep them from being harmed by the coyotes, badgers and foxes that share the mesa top.
“There is no way to free range all year long,” Paul Chenault said about the cold winters on the Mesa.
The reason for the eggs great taste, vitamin and mineral rich yolk is that the hens enjoy a mix of organic soy beans and a special vitamin and trace mineral mix by Helfter Feeds, Inc., along with a non-GMO corn, due to the high expense and difficulty in attaining organic corn.
The Chenault’s raise another 100 meat chickens for friends and family and keep goats for milk, cheese and meat.
At the Chenault farm “every meal is a celebration of life,” Paul Chenault said about his own farm to table kitchen.
