DESCRIPTION:Presenting a Bokashi Workshop by dedicated fermenter from Bozeman\, Montana\, Kathleen Rauch\, in collaboration with both Moonflower Coop and USU Moab in the Moonflower Coop Library. Bokashi is a revolutionary\, earth-friendly modification of traditional composting that involves fermenting food waste before adding it to soil or a compost pile. \nIn this demonstration workshop\, we will explore the myriad applications of Bokashi for home\, farm and commercial applications.   Learn how to recover precious nutrients from a full range of waste/organic material to create vibrant\, healthy\, microbial rich soil.   We will also cover a simple method of cultivating the beneficial microorganisms that are essential for the Bokashi process. \nKathleen Rauch is a dedicated fermenter from Bozeman\, Montana. SUMMARY:Abstract and Landscape art by Daniel Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Moab Art Walk \nDaniel Johnson is a visual artist from Moab Utah.  He and his wife\, Alexis\, recently returned to Moab from Oregon State University\, where she studied Veterinary medicine\, and he studied art.  He has a Bachelor of Fine Art from OSU\, and an Associate’s Degree from Dixie State in St. George\, Utah.  Daniel and Alexis currently live in Moab with their daughter Danielle.  They also have 3 cats\, 2 dogs\, 2 cockatiels\, a bearded Dragon\, and a mouse. \nHis interests as a painter originally developed in high school where he focused on landscapes.  Though he has broadened his practice into abstraction\, he still makes time to work on landscape paintings in his studio and in plein-air.  Both his abstract and representational work are meant to invoke the same transcendent feeling one may get while exploring the Moab area.  His work has been featured in over 25 shows during the past 8 years\, including his first public solo show at the Albany Civic Theatre in Albany Oregon\, and Prism Magazine\, an art journal at OSU. \nHe has work in three permanent collections at the OSU Memorial Union\, the Beth Ray Student Success Center\, and the Yaquina Art Association.  Awards for his art include the 2013-2014 Helen E. Plinkiewisch scholarship\, the 2012-2013 Yaquina Art Association Scholarship and purchase award\, and the 2013 Gold Grant Scholarship Award from the Northwest Watercolor Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:In the second edition of the Bee Garden Bike Tour\, we’ll be taking a look at the way landscapes affect communities and how you can shape your own yard to have a positive impact on biodiversity and our watershed while also creating abundant food and beauty. \nBike tour\n1. Meet at Moonflower Market – introduction to permaculture design principles\n2. Mill Creek – creeks and watershed health\n3. Garden Tour @ Moab Charter School – explaination of design\, appropriate plantings\, and earthworks\n3. Collaborative design activity at future garden site (different site than last tour)! \nAt each site we will discuss a variety of permaculture design principles and ecological landscaping practices used to create an ecologically-minded garden. Participants will learn techniques and see examples of water harvesting earthworks\, perennial plant guilds\, edible landscaping\, regenerative soil management\, and roof water catchment. \nAt the end of the bike tour we will engage in a design charette activity to apply what we have seen on the tour and begin to create a conceptual design for the space. Participants will gain experience in site assessment and design process that can applied to any landscape. \nBike tour is less than one mile and flat. All are welcome!
