SUMMARY:Round Up at the Register for the Moab COVID-19 Housing Relief Fund
DESCRIPTION:From June 17-30th\, we will be hosting a Round Up at the Register campaign to benefit the Moab COVID-19 Housing Relief Fund! \nWhen you shop at Moonflower during these two weeks\, you will have the opportunity to “round up” your purchases to the next whole dollar. 100% of your change will go directly to this fund\, which is intended to provide emergency housing assistance to individuals and families in the Moab area who are experiencing financial hardship due to the coronavirus crisis. This fund has been set up by the Moab Valley Multicultural Center and the Housing Authority of Southeastern Utah. \nMany of us have received a stimulus check or unemployment benefits due to being laid off of work because of COVID-19\, but many of our neighbors have not. While many landlords have deferred rent during the pandemic\, deferred payments will eventually come due and families still have to eat. Housing is a right that all humans should be able to have access to without the fear of removal. Studies show that homelessness can be a traumatic event that influences a person’s symptoms of mental illness. The Moab community has generously donated thousands of dollars to the Deferment Fund to help struggling families maintain their housing. \nThe Housing Authority’s first disbursement on May 7\, 2020 was able to provide a rent check for 13 families. They hope to be able to provide this much\, if not more\, help for all families that apply for the following months until things can return to some sense of normalcy. With the burden of rent alleviated for these families\, even if only for a month\, the stress of facing eviction will be reduced as well. They will be able to focus on using their money for purchasing healthy food and other necessities. Priority for the disbursement of the Fund will be given to those who have limited or no access to other types of relief. The money is given directly to the landlord. \nYou may have noticed…\nWe have been hosting more Round Up campaigns this year than our normal quarterly schedule. We are aiming to assist our many local non-profits who may be struggling to continue operating during the coronavirus pandemic\, and to aid special projects such as this housing relief fund. Just as a reminder\, when you round up your purchase total\, your change goes straight to the organizations. Our Pyramid Youth Programs provide afterschool\, summer\, recreational\, and other educational programs that instill youth with a commitment to learning and a connection to their community and the world beyond. The Green River Thrift Store provides the area with low-priced merchandise that would otherwise be unavailable and gives a second life to goods that would be thrown away. PACT’s affordable housing initiative\, Cottonwoods on the Green\, provides eight apartments in town. Oasis Food Program strives to ensure that all people in Green River have access to the resources needed to live healthy lives. The food pantry provides food assistance to our community. DESCRIPTION:This quarter’s Round Up at the Register campaign will run from May 1st-14th and will benefit Community Rebuilds! For a two-week period\, approximately every quarter\, we offer the opportunity for owners and customers to “round up” their purchases to the next whole dollar\, to raise funds for a local non-profit’s project or special purchase. \nCommunity Rebuilds’s mission is to build energy-efficient housing\, provide education on sustainability\, and improve the housing conditions for the local workforce through an affordable program. CR is an equal housing opportunity. Donations go towards making their homes affordable to low-income residents of Moab and supporting their internship program’s housing costs. In exchange for their labor on the build sites\, interns learn sustainable\, environmentally friendly construction practices like straw bale building and clay plastering. CR builds about six straw bale houses a year and educates 32 interns; they also welcome anyone to come volunteer with us at our build sites (after COVID-19 has passed…)! The Garden is at the center of all they do. \nThe Youth Garden Project serves over 1600 youth and 500 adults in garden-based programs every year. \nYGP meets community needs while using the garden as an interdisciplinary learning tool. YGP is making a difference in the way people and future generations relate to and are learning about the environment\, local food systems\, and growing their own food. Workshops will be held every other Monday at the Grand County Library’s large meeting room from 6-8pm. All workshops are free and open to the public. \nFEB. 17\nWorkshop #1: Permaculture Principles and Strategies for Your Landscape\nIn this workshop\, we will explore how permaculture provides a holistic framework and process for designing site-specific solutions. This presentation will start with a brief overview of the origins\, philosophical foundation\, and ethics of permaculture. Case scenarios and small group discussion will be used to explore permaculture principles and landscape strategies appropriate for Moab and the arid Southwest. \nMARCH 2\nWorkshop #2: Permaculture In Our Daily Lives\nWhile most often thought of in terms of gardening\, permaculture has more to offer as a holistic framework and process for cultivating context specific strategies and systems to achieve desired goals. Join us for the Trashion Show\, an upcycled outfit dance party on February 29th at Woody’s Tavern. \nFood and Farming: We value food access for all members of our community and do this through our Moab Community Gardens (MoCom) program. We run the East Bench Community Garden\, the upcoming International Nibble Garden\, donate to the Food Bank\, and are working on new community garden spaces at Our Village and on City of Moab property. \nDevelopment: We run and manage the CommuniTea Garden at 100 West and Walnut Lane. This space embodies many of our values by using and reusing resources\, brings more safe green space to the community\, provides a public venue for gathering and relaxation\, exemplifies water management techniques\, and is growing fruit and edible herbs for pubic use. \nJoin us for the Trashion Show on February 29th (Leap Day!)\, 2020 at 8 pm at Woody’s Tavern for a fun night of music\, dancing\, and an upcycled fashion runway show. DESCRIPTION:This quarter’s Round Up at the Register campaign will run from February 1st-14th and will benefit Underdog Animal Rescue & Rehab! For a two-week period\, once each quarter\, we offer the opportunity for owners and customers to “round up” their purchases to the next whole dollar\, to raise funds for a local non-profit’s project or special purchase. \nUnderdog’s mission is to rescue and rehabilitate companion animals from the Four Corners reservations of the American Southwest through vet care\, spay/neuter\, and adoption services\, while supporting Native Americans in the care of their animals. \nFunds raised from the Round Up campaign will be used locally for vet care\, medicines\, food\, transportation\, and animal care. SUMMARY:Introduction to Holistic Nutrition: Inflammation
DESCRIPTION:Do you feel exhausted\, down in the dumps\, irritable\, experience painful swelling or redness\, chronic allergies\, or migraines? It could be inflammation.\n\n\n \n\n\nNations of people walk around every day on fire from the inside out thanks to inflammation. This class will introduce the the perpetrators of terrifying constitution and ubiquitous presence that turn the warmth of digestion and circulation into raging wildfires\, and the heroes that tame the scalding heat by pushing out toxic burdens from the body.\n\n\n \n\n\nThis class will be taught by Faye Mays and Viska Arbogast. Faye is a Certified Master of Holistic Psychology from the American Institute of Holistic Health & Healing. They will teach what causes inflammation\, what helps to support the body experiencing inflammation\, and how you can integrate changes in your diet and lifestyle to fight inflammation. They will also share recipes\, resources\, and samples of anti-inflammatory foods.\n\n\n \n\n\nStart the new year by learning how you can fight with the heroes to restore optimal health!\n\n\n\n**At the request of the instructors\, we ask that attendees of this class arrive as fragrance-free as possible. Thank you for your cooperation!**\n\n\n\n—\n\n\n \n\n\nAbout Faye and Viska:\n\n\n \n\n\nViska first became aware of the impact of food on health in 2009\, when his girlfriend suffered from fructose malabsorption due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.  Observing the presence of toxicants in everyday products and food also guided Viska to embrace whole foods and release toxicants from personal use. His love of ancient spices and foods drove him to learn Asiatic cuisine and the healing properties of herbs and spices. He noticed his own health improve and wants to share what he has learned with others. His experience as an all-ages tutor in Japanese\, computer programming\, and mathematics gives him a broad and precise set of instructional skills.\n\n\n \n\n\nFaye took a college course entitled Biology and the Citizen in 2005 that brought inflammation and toxicants to her attention. The reality of the consequences of such factors sank in more deeply during her first pregnancy\, wherein she experienced more expressed symptoms and increased sensitivity to inflammatory agents.\n\n\n \n\n\nFaye spent time researching\, producing nourishing herbal infusions\, and practicing food as medicine to combat her symptoms and disease which\, as she discovered\, related to chemical injury. Choosing to study the Ayurvedic traditions\, eventually she established contact with a Brahman living in India who provided great knowledge and wisdom about the healing properties of herbs\, spices\, and human physiology.\n\n\n \n\n\nFaye first worked as a teacher at the age of eight\, leading groups of kindergartners for her mother\, a teacher. Since then\, Faye has been a guest instructor for art\, music\, and English\, a college level teaching assistant\, and mother. She spends a great deal of her personal time researching and educating others on various health-related subjects because she believes everyone deserves to feel better.

Eric will talk about indications and practical applications of essential oils as well the connection of essential oils to alchemy\, chemistry\, and the innate spirit/intelligence of the plants’ nature available through essential oil use. Other topics Eric will cover include: \n\nThe importance of essential oils produced from regional plants and trees for “community immunity.” Essential oils will be passed around for imbibing the aromatics.\n“Neat” use (do’s and don’ts)\, dilution\, and diffusion.\nThe difference between therapeutic\, cosmetic\, and industrial grade essential oils and the importance of knowing the difference and why.\nThe difference between essential oils\, hydrosols\, oil infusions\, teas\, and tinctures.\nThe fundamentals of the distillation process.\n\nEric will also be at Moonflower from 12-4pm doing a floor demo with his essential oils and other House of Aromatics products. Stop by and say hi! \nHouse of Aromatics is a small artisan essential oil distillery located in the high desert mountains of southern Utah and operated as a one-man business by Eric Scott Bresselsmith. The primary products are steam-distilled essential oils of conifers and brushes that grow right here where we live: among them pines\, firs\, junipers\, spruce\, snakeweed\, sage\, and rabbitbrush. Eric began self studying herbalism in 1989\, was an organic farmer through the 90s\, and has been distilling small batches of wild crafted essential oils since 2008.

For a two-week period\, once each quarter\, we offer the opportunity for owners and customers to “round up” their purchases to the next whole dollar\, to raise funds for a local non-profit’s project or special purchase. Last quarter\, we partnered with the Full Circle Intertribal Center and raised over $1\,200 for them\, benefiting our local Native and Indigenous communities. \nFrom HSMV: \n“Funds raised from the Round Up campaign will be used for a special project to sterilize pets belonging to low income families in the Moab area. The overall objective of this project is to reduce the financial burden of sterilizing pets owned by low-income residents. Many pets are intact\, and animals are often surrendered or turned loose because low-income families can’t afford pet care or move and don’t take their pets with them. A helping hand will help break the cycle of unwanted\, unaffordable litters and abandoned pets. The specific objective is to sterilize 50 pets from low-income households in the Moab area.
