SUMMARY:Artist Reception with Guest Artist Nick Perdue
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special artist reception with our featured local guest artist for the month of September\, Nick Perdue! \nFor many years\, I’ve enjoyed photography at a glance but truly reignited my passion for it two years ago through the medium of film photography. Through trial and error (and the occasional YouTube video) over the years\, I have learned many techniques and began to establish a baseline composition style and artistic vision. \nI’m a Colorado transplant with a typical Colorado upbringing\, where my early introduction to the outdoors made me into an avid outdoorsman. While I enjoy outdoor recreation like many a Durangotang or Moabite\, I like to the find patterns and symmetry within man-made structures as well. Although I have been inspired by many landscape photographers like Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange\, I really enjoy challenging myself with other forms of photography such as street or portrait photography. \nWorking with the unpredictable nature of film photography\, I have come to enjoy the imperfections within my photos as well. I have come to embrace wabi-sabi\, a Japanese philosophy that emphasizes the beauty within imperfections\, and incorporate it into my art style\, and I hope you enjoy it as well. Please come along and enjoy the wonderful perspective of the world I have captured through the eye of a lens. \nStop by our Datura Deli community space and see what you think of Nick’s work. Light refreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:5% Day for Grand County Education Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, September 8th in supporting the Grand County Education Foundation! \nThe Grand County Education Foundation’s mission is to seek out funding to support activities and programs that are offered to Grand County K-12 students to strengthen their academic\, social\, emotional\, and physical well-being. \nThe GCEF is organized as a public charity and recognized as a 501(c)(3)\, tax exempt entity. Their top priority is the implementation of programs\, equipment\, and materials that will have an immediate impact on all students in the Grand County School District. \nThe GCEF feels that all students deserve the tools\, resources\, and experiences that will inspire and prepare them for a better future\, and wants our our students of Grand County to leave our schools socially aware\, culturally sensitive\, academically proficient\, and economically viable citizens of our community. \nFunding from the 5% Day will be utilized for: \n\nAcademic activities and athletic programs\nArts and music programs\nScholarships\nSupporting school libraries\nHomeschooling needs\nSupporting major school or classroom projects\nRecruiting volunteers to assist children\nOffering teacher recognition\nAnd more!\n\nThe GCEF receives funding from the following sources: \n\nPrivate donations\nCorporate donations\nFoundation donations\nBequests\nTransfers\nGifts\n\nGrand County Demographics \nGrand County School District (GCSD) is unique as a rural district serving a population that covers an entire county of approximately 10\,000 residents. GCSD is comprised of a student enrollment of 1529 with a 50% poverty level and 128 students who are limited in English proficiency. \nRisk factors for students who live in poverty and those with limited English proficiency increase as students continue into middle and high school. Risk factors include: few support systems to assist with school work\, belonging to anti-social peer groups\, and unhealthy lifestyles. These factors place stress on student performance which creates an increase in drop-out rates. An increase in drop-out rates equates to an increase in crime\, teen pregnancy\, depression\, and willingness to work in low-paying jobs rather than being career oriented. \nIt is recognized nationally that students perform better and stay in school longer if their educational experiences include hands-on\, experiential learning\, and opportunities for the arts and recreation. \nEvery second Tuesday of the month\, Moonflower Co-op donates 5% of the day’s proceeds to an organization doing important work in our community. If you are interested in signing your organization up for a 5% Day\, please fill out this form.
