SUMMARY:June ArtWalk with Andy Savarese
DESCRIPTION:The June Moab ArtWalk will be Saturday\, June 11th from 5-8pm. Stop by the Datura Deli to check out the current art show on display. Our featured local artist\, Andy Savarese\, will be present during the ArtWalk to chat with about his work. Light refreshments will be provided. \nAbout Andy: \nI’ve been painting Southern Utah since arriving on the Navajo Reservation to work at Monument Valley Hospital in the winter of ’94. While there I made many friends among the Navajo who would invite me along on expeditions to very remote and seldom seen areas. This fed my love and appreciation for Southeastern Utah\, its people\, and its unspoiled beauty. After the Hospital in Monument Valley closed I lived in Bluff for half a decade before moving to Moab. \nI’ve read and studied the writings of John Carlson\, Harold Speed\, Virgil Elliott and many\, many\, other oil painting authorities and teachers. Though I’ve studied the principles and techniques\, which oil painters should study\, understand\, and employ so as to ever hope to create a thing worthy of your attention\, mastery continues to elude me. Somehow in the process of putting paint to canvas I inevitably forget all the tenets of composition\, color theory\, principles of visual reality\, techniques of the Old Masters and on and on. It seems I am innately programmed by some quirk of genetic happenstance to stubbornly revert to what it is I do and you witness here. \nMy artistic idols are John Singer Sargent\, Andres Zorn\, Josh Elliott\, Glenn Dean\, Antonio Savarese\, and others whom I would not even dare to mention in a bio about myself. My inspiration is everything I see and experience and have seen and experienced for more than half a century. Further inspiration is drawn from my wife and 3 artist children\, from whom I continue to learn\, and who endure endless volumes of linseed oil\, the noxious smell of turpentine\, and the use of our dining room table for various framing and other artistic misadventures. \nCome see what you think and meet Andy at the May ArtWalk!

SUMMARY:5% Day for Boulder Outdoor Survival School
DESCRIPTION:Every second Tuesday of the month\, Moonflower Co-op donates 5% of the day’s proceeds to an organization doing important work in our community. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, June 14th to support the Boulder Outdoor Survival School in Boulder\, Utah! \n \nThe Boulder Outdoor Survival School is a non-profit outdoor survival school in Boulder\, Utah that began in 1968. BOSS is dedicated to the instruction and preservation of traditional living skills and the development of people through experiences within the natural world. \nBOSS offers 7-\, 14-\, and 28-day field courses that are simulated survival expeditions\, as well as skill-specific courses like Wilderness First Responder\, Hunter/Gatherer\, and Navigation. These courses “get you disconnected from the screen(s) and reconnected to being a human.” While a BOSS course is not the only way to do this\, these field courses are unique because they are simulated survival experiences that explicitly challenge the participant’s spirit/mind/body in ways other outdoor courses often avoid. Students typically gain a deeper understanding of self and group reliance and what matters most in life\, as well as insight\, growth\, renewal\, and discovery through their interactions with the land and their fellow expedition-mates. \nA blurb from BOSS: \n“If you have ever felt like you were ill-prepared and/or curious how you would fare in a survival situation\, a BOSS field course might be for you. Taking a course with the Boulder Outdoor Survival School will provide you with unique skills that are applicable in any outdoor context and everyday life. It is more than just challenging yourself. It is about discovering insights into who you are through pushing yourself further than you would on your own. The knowledge of the past and how to work with what the Land offers is as applicable today as it has ever been.
