SUMMARY:Round Up at the Register for Grand Area Mentoring
DESCRIPTION:This quarter’s Round Up at the Register campaign will be held from May 1st-14th and will benefit Grand Area Mentoring! For a two-week period\, once a quarter\, we offer the opportunity for owners and customers to “round up” their purchases to the next whole dollar to raise funds for a local non-profit’s project or special purchase. \nGrand Area Mentoring matches caring adults with promising children. Participants meet weekly to build strong relationships based on trust and shared activities like hiking\, arts and crafts\, and talking about life. Mentored youth earn higher grades\, report being happier\, and get along better with others. \n\n98% of mentored youth report being happier!\nThe average mentoring relationship in Moab lasts for four years!\nParents say things like: “Mentoring is the best decision I ever made for my daughter.”\nMentors and mentees enjoy shopping here together using a grant from Moonflower’s Seeds to Start program.\nGrand Area Mentoring will offer a volunteer orientation in September. Follow GAM on Facebook and Instagram for more updates.\n\nDonations are used to recruit and screen mentors\, purchase art supplies and sports equipment\, and provide ongoing support to each relationship. \nThank you for rounding up so Moab’s children have kind people to learn from\, lean on\, and look up to! \nIf your organization is interested in participating in Round Up at the Register\, please apply here or ask for an application at our office.

SUMMARY:5% Day for Canyonlands Field Institute
DESCRIPTION:Every second Tuesday of the month\, Moonflower Co-op donates 5% of the day’s proceeds to an organization doing important work in our community. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, May 10th to support Canyonlands Field Institute! \nCanyonlands Field Institute provides quality outdoor education on the Colorado Plateau to inspire care of wild places and renew the human spirit. Our charitable efforts focus on ensuring that we reach a wide range of children by underwriting all land and river-based programs with additional need-based scholarships for local students. Each year CFI reaches over 1\,000 youth through our Outdoor Science School Programs. \nWe are grateful to be included in Moonflower’s 5% Day program to help us provide support to the families of Moab with our low-cost summer camps. The camps get children active and outside as they learn about and connect to our local landscape. \nIf you are interested in signing your organization up for a 5% Day\, please fill out this form.

SUMMARY:May ArtWalk with Andy Savarese
DESCRIPTION:The May Moab ArtWalk will be Saturday\, May 14th from 5-8pm. Stop by the Datura Deli to check out the current art show on display. Our featured local artist\, Andy Savarese\, will be present during the ArtWalk to chat with about his work. Light refreshments will be provided. \nAbout Andy: \nI’ve been painting Southern Utah since arriving on the Navajo Reservation to work at Monument Valley Hospital in the winter of ’94. While there I made many friends among the Navajo who would invite me along on expeditions to very remote and seldom seen areas. This fed my love and appreciation for Southeastern Utah\, its people\, and its unspoiled beauty. After the Hospital in Monument Valley closed I lived in Bluff for half a decade before moving to Moab. \nI’ve read and studied the writings of John Carlson\, Harold Speed\, Virgil Elliott and many\, many\, other oil painting authorities and teachers. Though I’ve studied the principles and techniques\, which oil painters should study\, understand\, and employ so as to ever hope to create a thing worthy of your attention\, mastery continues to elude me. Somehow in the process of putting paint to canvas I inevitably forget all the tenets of composition\, color theory\, principles of visual reality\, techniques of the Old Masters and on and on. It seems I am innately programmed by some quirk of genetic happenstance to stubbornly revert to what it is I do and you witness here. \nMy artistic idols are John Singer Sargent\, Andres Zorn\, Josh Elliott\, Glenn Dean\, Antonio Savarese\, and others whom I would not even dare to mention in a bio about myself. My inspiration is everything I see and experience and have seen and experienced for more than half a century. Further inspiration is drawn from my wife and 3 artist children\, from whom I continue to learn\, and who endure endless volumes of linseed oil\, the noxious smell of turpentine\, and the use of our dining room table for various framing and other artistic misadventures. \nCome see what you think and meet Andy at the May ArtWalk!
