SUMMARY:Round Up at the Register for the Humane Society of Moab Valley
DESCRIPTION:This quarter’s Round Up at the Register campaign will run from November 1st-14th and will benefit the Humane Society of Moab Valley (HSMV). For a two-week period\, once each quarter\, we offer the opportunity for owners and customers to “round up” their purchases to the next whole dollar\, to raise funds for a local non-profit’s project or special purchase. Last quarter\, we partnered with the Full Circle Intertribal Center and raised over $1\,200 for them\, benefiting our local Native and Indigenous communities. \nFrom HSMV: \n“Funds raised from the Round Up campaign will be used for a special project to sterilize pets belonging to low income families in the Moab area. The overall objective of this project is to reduce the financial burden of sterilizing pets owned by low-income residents. Many pets are intact\, and animals are often surrendered or turned loose because low-income families can’t afford pet care or move and don’t take their pets with them. A helping hand will help break the cycle of unwanted\, unaffordable litters and abandoned pets. The specific objective is to sterilize 50 pets from low-income households in the Moab area. Cost-savings by eliminating unwanted litters and stray and homeless animals will strengthen and stabilize our entire community.” \nIf your organization is interested in participating in Round Up at the Register\, please apply here or ask for an application at our office.

SUMMARY:“Grocery Story: The Promise of Food Co-ops in the Age of Grocery Giants” Book Tour Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Grocery stores exert considerable influence over the global food supply and in the communities we live. How do the largest grocers today maintain their grip on food makers\, communities\, and eaters? \nAs part of his North American book release tour\, hear author Jon Steinman offer up a preview of his new book\, “Grocery Story: The Promise of Food Co-ops in the Age of Grocery Giants\,” including disturbing trends emerging among the dominant grocers. \nJon’s new book makes a compelling case for how food co-ops\, as alternatives to corporate grocery giants\, are spurring the creation of delicious local food economies and stronger communities\, while changing the global food system for the better. \nAbout Jon:\nJon Steinman was the producer and host of the internationally syndicated radio show and podcast Deconstructing Dinner and of Deconstructing Dinner: Reconstructing our Food System–a television and web series currently streaming online. Jon was an elected director from 2006-2016 of the Kootenay Co-op–Canada’s largest independent retail consumer food co-op\, serving as Board President from 2014-2016. He lives in Nelson\, British Columbia. \nPraise for Grocery Story: “A great read! Full of energy and eyes-wide-open hope. In an era of extreme economic concentration\, Jon Steinman awakens us to elements of an arising democratic economy\, hidden in plain sight. Grocery Story is\, above all\, an empowering tale we need now more than ever.” -Frances Moore Lappé\, author of Diet for a Small Planet\, and\, most recently coauthor of Daring Democracy \nFor more information\, please contact outreach@moonflower.coop.

SUMMARY:November ArtWalk with Guest Artist Shari Michaud
DESCRIPTION:The last Moab ArtWalk of 2019 will be Saturday\, November 9th from 5-8pm. Stop by the Datura Deli to check out the current art show on display. In November we will feature Shari Michaud\, who will be present during the ArtWalk to chat with about her work. Snacks will be provided. \nShari Michaud is a Moab-based ceramic artist and acrylic painter. She says beyond creating what she’s inspired to create\, she doesn’t have an agenda\, goal\, or purpose besides maybe finding one. She’s content having people smilie\, rolling-eyes\, and figuring. She’s interested in simple shapes\, uncomplicated subjects\, and a limited palette. Her ceramic sculptures are displayed at Gallery Moab. Her original paintings and prints are at Tumbleweed.

SUMMARY:5% Day for WabiSabi
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, November 12\, in supporting WabiSabi\, Moab’s community thrift store! \nWabiSabi is a nonprofit organization that aims to support other local nonprofits by providing them with money\, materials and mentorship. Wabi does this in the form of grants for projects that will make a difference in the Moab community\, by providing scholarships for nonprofit professionals to attend trainings and workshops\, and by redistributing materials and money raised through our community-donation based thrift store! \nWabiSabi also hosts nonprofit relevant speakers and presenters\, holds regular nonprofit networking events\, and acts as a support system and resource center for all local nonprofit organizations. We aim to help Moab’s high concentration (100+ registered!) of nonprofit organizations thrive and succeed in their own individual missions. \nWabiSabi additionally provides immediate relief vouchers for individuals in need\, allowing community members access to necessary items for free and hosts an annual beloved and extremely well-attended free/by donation community Thanksgiving dinner. \nEvery second Tuesday of the month\, Moonflower Co-op donates 5% of the day’s proceeds to an organization doing important work in our community. If you are interested in signing your organization up for a 5% Day\, please fill out this form.
