SUMMARY:5% Day for Grand Area Mentoring
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, October 14th to support Grand Area Mentoring! \n\nGrand Area Mentoring matches caring adults with promising children. Participants meet weekly to build strong relationships based on trust and shared activities like hiking\, arts and crafts\, and talking about life. Mentored youth earn higher grades\, report being happier\, and get along better with others. \nDuring the 2023-2024 school year\, Grand Area Mentoring provided 79 of the district’s highest risk youth with weekly one-on-one mentoring. \n\n85% of mentored youth got in less trouble at school\n100% of parents agree their children are happier\n100% of teachers agree that mentoring supports vulnerable youth who exhibit antisocial behavior\, have few friendships\, demonstrate low commitment to school\, earn poor grades\, and/or live in a troubled home\n\nGrand Area Mentoring is focused on supporting families and our community. Longer mentoring matches lead to better outcomes. Special events and trainings for mentors and mentees in the last year have included: an Arches National Park interpretive hike\, an off-road tour\, cookie making at the Youth Garden Project\, mentor training with a career specialist\, a Moab Golf Course outing\, Moab Museum events\, Sand Flats campfire and exploration\, Raven’s Rim zip line tours\, a Climb Moab Gym outing\, and advanced mentor trainings such as Trauma-Informed Mentoring Part 1\, 2\, and 3\, Facilitating Attuned Interactions Part 1 and 2\, Sexual Abuse Awareness\, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Primer\, and more. \nGrand Area Mentoring will use the funds from the 5% Day for general operations. The program’s budget is lean\, and its fundraising commitment represents only about 10% of expenses\, which means 90% of funds facilitate direct service. Specifically\, money raised during the 5% day will cover: the recruitment\, screening\, and training of mentors; training of students; ongoing support of matches and family outreach; evaluation and continuous improvement; community-based programming; and integration within our schools. Grant funds support staff\, mentor curriculum needs\, mentoring activity materials\, event supplies\, advanced trainer stipends\, and communication with stakeholders. \nEvery second Tuesday of the month\, Moonflower Co-op donates 5% of the day’s proceeds to an organization doing important work in our community. If you are interested in signing your organization up for a 5% Day\, please fill out this form.

SUMMARY:Round Up at the Register for Moab Charter School
DESCRIPTION:This quarter’s Round Up at the Register campaign will be held from May 1st-14th and will benefit the Moab Charter School! For a two-week period\, once a quarter\, we offer the opportunity for owners and customers to “round up” their purchases to the next whole dollar to raise funds for a local non-profit’s project or special purchase. \nMoab Charter School is a free\, public K-6 charter school with small class sizes and an added focus on arts and outdoors. It was established in 2004 by a group of active parents from Moab and Castle Valley interested in providing an alternative to local schools in a small school\, small class size setting. The mission of Moab Charter School is to support and challenge each child to develop critical thinking\, self-direction\, and their full academic and creative potential. \nMCS uses the Utah State Office of Education common core state standards as guidelines for curriculum and instruction and is dedicated to providing individualized education through small\, differentiated classes. The arts and outdoors are important foundational aspects of their whole school curriculum. Teachers are also empowered to design innovative curricula and use creative instruction approaches. \nIf you choose to donate\, 100% of your change will go directly to MCS; Moonflower does not take any cut. SUMMARY:5% Day for Mindfulness in Education
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, December 10th to support Mindfulness in Education! \n\nOur mission is “is to strengthen youth’s learning capacity\, mental wellbeing\, empathy\, and ability to thrive and contribute by teaching yoga and mindfulness skills to students.” We offer yoga and mindfulness classes at both the high school and the elementary school. Our focus in the community is to help our students learn how to better cope with stress and anxiety and to hopefully teach them skills that they can carry with them throughout their lives. These funds will only be used to compensate our instructors. \nAll administration comes from volunteers. We are a small non-profit and any funding we receive goes directly to the teachers who are dedicated and impassioned about teaching these important skills. We are currently working on a simple website that is being done by a volunteer. \nWe are also working with school administrators as we would like to be able to expand our offerings to the middle school in the future. Currently we are working at keeping our current programs funded for the coming school year. \nStudies have shown us the importance of good mental health. We have the students submit evaluations at the end of each trimester. It is apparent from these evaluations how much they are taking away from these classes. We will continue working to keep going to further benefit as many students as we can! \n\n\n\n\n\nEvery second Tuesday of the month\, Moonflower Co-op donates 5% of the day’s proceeds to an organization doing important work in our community. If you are interested in signing your organization up for a 5% Day\, please fill out this form.

SUMMARY:5% Day for Science Moab
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, October 8th to support Science Moab! \nScience Moab is a local 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to make place-based science accessible to all. We envision communities across the Colorado Plateau thriving from a deeper engagement with science and place-based knowledge. \nScience Moab offers fun and innovative programming designed to build bridges between community members and the rich natural science happening on the unique and fragile lands surrounding us. We serve the community through three three key programs: Outreach (radio show/podcast and live event series)\, School to Science (science mentorship for local high school students)\, and Science Certified (training local guides to communicate place-based science to clients). \nThese funds will be used to support Science Moab’s School to Science program\, which creates hands-on science mentorship opportunities for Grand County High School students with local and visiting scientists in the lab\, the field\, and museums. \nSpecifically\, these funds will be put toward the vital programmatic cost of transporting students to and from their job shadows and internships with local scientists. The majority of School to Science placements take place with researchers in the field\, whether on local public lands\, or in more remote\, backcountry areas of Grand\, Emery\, and San Juan Counties. Opportunities in the field range from joining day-long paleontological digs outside of Green River or forestry crews in the La Sals\, to making site visits to test soils with a geotechnical engineer or conducting daily data collection in an experimental ecology plot. \nScience Moab ensures that this innovative program is entirely free and as accessible as possible for all students\, including by covering the costs of and providing transportation to and from the field\, and by reimbursing mileage for students who transport themselves. \nEvery second Tuesday of the month\, Moonflower Co-op donates 5% of the day’s proceeds to an organization doing important work in our community. If you are interested in signing your organization up for a 5% Day\, please fill out this form.

SUMMARY:5% Day for Walnut Lane Donation Fund
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, July 9th in supporting our neighbors\, families\, and friends on Walnut Lane by shopping at Moonflower on July 9th. Every second Tuesday of the month\, Moonflower Co-op donates 5% of the day’s proceeds to an organization doing important work in our community\, and this month we will be donating to the the Walnut Lane Donation Fund. \nIn April\, residents at the Walnut Lane Trailer Park were told that they needed to leave their homes\, as the city would be terminating their leases by the end of June due to losing coverage from its insurance provider. Many of these families did not and do not have another place to go. Although the city was able to provide financial support to most residents to help with rehousing efforts\, there are individuals who still fell through the cracks and are in need of assistance. \nAny money donated from Moonflower would be given as direct aid to residents who did not receive money from the city of Moab at the end of their lease term. As these residents try to get back on their feet\, these funds will help with housing\, utilities\, and other costs. \nWe will continue to distribute funds by partnering with local non-profit service providers\, including the Moab Valley Multicultural Center\, Seekhaven\, Moab Solutions\, and community health care providers. \nTo date\, we have raised over $20\,000\, which has already been provided directly to former Walnut Lane residents\, many of whom have been able to secure new housing for themselves and their families\, or use this community funding help to find emergency short-term housing. Help us give an extra and much-needed boost to these vulnerable families and help keep them in our community with a new safe\, stable place to live. \nFor more information about the fund\, check out the GoFundMe here. \nIf you are interested in signing your organization up for a 5% Day\, please fill out this form.

SUMMARY:Round Up at the Register for Mindfulness in Education
DESCRIPTION:For the first two weeks in May\, we will be hosting our quarterly Round Up at the Register fundraiser for local nonprofit Mindfulness in Education! When you shop at Moonflower from May 1st through 14th\, you will have the option of rounding up your purchase total to the nearest dollar (or more)\, and your change will go directly to supporting this organization! \nMindfulness in Education is a small nonprofit that has been offering mindfulness and yoga training to the students of Grand County for 10 years. Their mission is “to strengthen youth’s learning capacity\, mental wellbeing\, empathy\, and ability to thrive and contribute by teaching yoga and mindfulness skills to students.” \nWe offer programs at both the high school and elementary school. We hope to expand to the middle school\, depending on our funding and cooperation with the school. The programs happen right in the schools. Our high school Yoga and Mindfulness class provides students with both skills to deal with stress\, how to be happier in life\, how to deal with challenging situations in addition to providing them with a credit that can go towards their graduation requirements. \nAll our students have dealt with the trauma of living through Covid. When talking to teachers and administrators\, they all feel that students are still struggling. And there are many students who have situations in life that cause difficulties for them even when Covid is not part of our lives. The benefit of our youth learning mindfulness skills is huge! They will take these skills into their lives and be able to access them when needed. \nOur long term goal is to work more closely with the school district to have our classes become part of the school curriculum. \nWe run on a very small budget. 100% of all donations will go directly to paying the instructors. We have volunteers who handle all the administrative duties. \n\nLearn more about our Round Up at the Register program here.

SUMMARY:Round Up at the Register for Moab Community Gardens
DESCRIPTION:For the first two weeks of February\, we will be hosting a Round Up at the Register campaign to benefit Moab Community Gardens! When you shop at Moonflower during these two weeks\, you will have the option of rounding up your purchase total to the nearest dollar (or more)\, and 100% of your change will go directly to MoCom Gardens! \nMoab Community (MoCom) Gardens was founded in 2018 with the mission to support local food security by providing growing spaces to the community\, so that individuals with limited or no access to land or gardening resources may have an affordable opportunity to grow food for themselves and their families. \nThe project aims to create welcoming community spaces that are open and safe for people of all abilities and backgrounds. \nThis volunteer-run organization currently manages three community gardens in the Moab valley\, at East Bench\, Our Village\, and WabiSabi. Funds from the Round Up will go toward the development of the new community garden at Arroyo Crossing\, the new affordable housing development in Spanish Valley. \nLearn more about our Round Up at the Register program here.
