SUMMARY:5% Day for Science Moab
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, October 8th to support Science Moab! \nScience Moab is a local 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to make place-based science accessible to all. We envision communities across the Colorado Plateau thriving from a deeper engagement with science and place-based knowledge. \nScience Moab offers fun and innovative programming designed to build bridges between community members and the rich natural science happening on the unique and fragile lands surrounding us. We serve the community through three three key programs: Outreach (radio show/podcast and live event series)\, School to Science (science mentorship for local high school students)\, and Science Certified (training local guides to communicate place-based science to clients). \nThese funds will be used to support Science Moab’s School to Science program\, which creates hands-on science mentorship opportunities for Grand County High School students with local and visiting scientists in the lab\, the field\, and museums. \nSpecifically\, these funds will be put toward the vital programmatic cost of transporting students to and from their job shadows and internships with local scientists. The majority of School to Science placements take place with researchers in the field\, whether on local public lands\, or in more remote\, backcountry areas of Grand\, Emery\, and San Juan Counties. Opportunities in the field range from joining day-long paleontological digs outside of Green River or forestry crews in the La Sals\, to making site visits to test soils with a geotechnical engineer or conducting daily data collection in an experimental ecology plot. \nScience Moab ensures that this innovative program is entirely free and as accessible as possible for all students\, including by covering the costs of and providing transportation to and from the field\, and by reimbursing mileage for students who transport themselves. \nEvery second Tuesday of the month\, Moonflower Co-op donates 5% of the day’s proceeds to an organization doing important work in our community.
